Science fiction is becoming reality, as Iceland steps forward to explore the transformative potential of space-based solar power (SBSP). While not yet operational, Iceland’s partnership with Space Solar is setting the stage for a revolutionary clean energy project that could redefine the global energy landscape.


SBSP involves capturing solar energy in orbit, where sunlight is constant and uninterrupted, and transmitting it wirelessly to Earth. This cutting-edge approach could provide a continuous, weather-independent energy supply, and Iceland could be the first country to benefit from this technology.


According to a recent announcement, Space Solar has signed an agreement to develop the world’s first commercial SBSP project in Iceland. The ambitious timeline aims to deliver 30 MW of space-based solar energy to the country within six years, with the ultimate goal of achieving gigawatt-level capacity within 12 years. Iceland, already a global leader in renewable energy with its reliance on geothermal and hydropower, is the perfect testing ground for SBSP. China is also pushing ahead with SBSP, aiming to deploy a space solar station by 2028 with plans to scale up to gigawatt-level output by 2050. While the UK is investing in its own SBSP research, Iceland’s collaboration with Space Solar could mark a turning point for this emerging technology. The next decade will be critical, as the project moves from concept to reality.


The potential is enormous. Unlike ground-based renewables, SBSP offers consistent energy output 24/7 and can deliver power to even the most remote areas. If Iceland successfully realizes this vision, it could catalyze a global shift toward space-based energy systems and establish a sustainable solution to the world’s growing energy demands.
