In a groundbreaking move, Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras and the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) have launched the ProFloresta+ program, aiming to finance forest restoration in the Amazon through carbon credit purchases.


Key Highlights:


  • Investment: The pilot phase commits approximately 450 million reais (around $78.45 million) to reforest about 15,000 hectares (37,065 acres). ​

  • Carbon Sequestration: Over 25 years, the initiative aims to capture approximately 15 million tons of CO₂, equivalent to offsetting annual emissions from 8.94 million gasoline-powered cars. ​

Petrobras will issue tenders to purchase carbon credits from verified reforestation projects. Winning bidders will receive low-interest loans from BNDES's Climate Fund to establish their projects, promoting both environmental restoration and economic development. ​
